I bought an old magnavox stereo console and cleaned it up and got it in good playing condition. I've been taking some of KRVM's old blues records home and ejoying getting to listen some great classic blues. You just can't dupicate the deep rich sound quality that you get with records.
I started this morning's show off with a great version of I'd rather go blind from the Queen of the blues herself Koko Taylor and that kind of set the tone for this morning show which was very heavy to Chicago blues, and you can't go wrong with that. Speaking of blues Royalty we had Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and his band in town a few weeks ago for a great performance, giving the crowd a wonderful taste of Chicago blues done by a couple of the guys that helped create it. Bob Stroger is the bass player in Willie "Big Eyes" band and he is one of the best! As he put it "He is the blues". He's played with just about any great Chicago blues artist you can think of, and he along with the late Willie Kent and Willie Dixon have helped to forge the great Chicago blues syle. Bob Stroger is good enough that he could have stole the show, but like the great bass player he is he knows his role is to lay down the bottom and help hold the band together. I got to tell you Bob Stroger and drummer James Mayes laid down one of the tightest rythem sections you'll hear anywhere. With that said, I thought it would be fun to do a show that featured Bob Stroger and some of the people that he's played with through the years. So I threw about 17 songs with that theme into the middle of this mornings show.

This mornings show was a nice mix of mostly up-tempo songs featuring a few blues songs that had a nice jazz feel to them . I thought a couple highlights of todays show were Lisa Mills doing Jimmy Hall's "Keep on Smiling", from her "Tempered with Fire" CD and Jimmy Hall doing the title track on his very fine "Rendezvous with the Blues". I'm also enjoying Jimmy Thackery's new live release and I played "Daze in May" from that CD. Also worth noting is Kirk Fletcher and Coco Montoya have new CD's out. They both sound great and I'm looking foward to playimg them both a whole bunch.

It seems I'm always playing an albums title track during the course of a usual Thusday morning blues show. So I thought "wouldn't it be kind of cool and maybe a little unique to play an entire show featuring nothing but title tracks"? As it turns out, it's not that imaginative since roughly a third of our blues library is CDs that feature a song on the album that is also the title of the album as well. So truthfully I could do numerous shows that feature title tracks and cover a lot of ground. A nice thing about doing a show this way is that it led me to play songs that I might not play otherwise. Overall I'd say it was a great experience and it turned out to be a pretty good show (if I do say so myself) and a lot of fun.

This morning’s play list is just another example of the eclectic mix of post WWII blues that we feature on Thursday mornings “Breakfast with the Blues” on KRVM. I enjoy playing music from all my favorites’ artists and this week I’ve added one more favorite to my long list. Today I featured new music from “Julie Black”. Her “You Just Might Win” CD is nothing less than pure entertainment and the title track off the CD is a can’t miss knock out song that should appeal to a massive blues and jazz audience. I can’t wait to share more songs off this album in weeks ahead. I also played a couple songs from Eric Bibb’s new CD “Booker’s Guitar” which is a sweet easy to listen to CD featuring beautiful instrumentation and Eric’s usual smooth delivery. Great stuff. I had such a great time yesterday...been awhile and logged a few more greatful notches on my life since last time. Peggy and I faced our second fight between me and Cancer...we are happy to report we are 2 and 0. Dr Walker headed a brillant team and our friends and family held us in a warm positive light. If you listen to my Thursday morning Breakfast with the Blues show very much you know that I generally like to play my favorite artists with a mixture of classic recordings, popular cuts and a sprinkling of new music. We’ve been getting so much great new (and some not so great) music in that its fun to dig through the blues cabinet to see what has arrived since my last show. This week highlights were a new release from Detroit jazz / blues drummer RJ Spangler “You know I can’t refuse” featuring a great cast of Detroit bluesmen including Bill Heid on keyboard. This is an excellent recording with great renditions of classic tunes of Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Dixon Jimmy Weatherspoon and many others. I also enjoyed spinning the new Debbie Davies all instrumental album called Holdin’ Court, along with Pete Anderson’s “Even things up” and I’m looking forward to hearing more from the new CD from Quintus McCormick “Hey Jodie. So much new stuff… so little time.
With that said, let’s not forget some of the more solid classic recordings that set the bar and withstood the test of time.
How do you really pick a best or favorite recording for someone like BB King? I mean really. He’s produced so much good music over his career.

This morning’s Breakfast with the Blues show was a fun mix of electric blues. We have so much new music rolling in (thanks primarily to our relentless Sunday morning blues host BoogieKing Steve) it’s hard not to want to include a lot of new music to your show. It’s a little tough to try to sort through new music and find the treasures while you’re in the middle of a live show, so I like to take stuff home and give it a good honest listen, especially if it’s someone I’ve never heard of. Taking the CD home with me and really giving it a chance helps me feel good about the new artists I’m playing, especially since the songs I’m putting on the air are likely (at least to me) some of the best songs on the recording. On the other hand it’s easy to find jewels during your show when you get new stuff in from artists that you’re familiar. For instance I felt comfortable previewing new releases from Darrel Nulisch, Doug Deming, Eric Deaton, Al Basile and Corey Harris on the fly. These all sounded good to me and I’m looking forward to playing more from these artists as well as more music form Shane Dwight and Shaun Murphy. Since I’m babbling on about new music a new CD that caught my eye and ear was a new CD from Pat Pepin. The cover artwork features Pat with her baritone sax. I’m a sucker for a baritone, and the thought of a female baritone sax player intrigued me. Every song I keyed up sounded great so it was easy to find some jewels on this CD, and I look forward to taking this one home for a closer listen and playing it often on my show.

I really had a great time Hosting the Jam up in Albany for Froggy (Vicki Stevens Band) this past weekend...but once again Bill...local hot shot guitar dude/nice guy and regular at the jam...reminded me of my apparent tardy behavoir when it comes to my play list. On a serious note...I am a cancer survivor...and it was close...I was stage four advanced non-hodgkins lymphoma. Peggy and I had been married for 9 months when her company...(an imaging co) found it in an MRI for some back pain I was having. I made it...5 years now...26 hits of radiation...5 hits of Chemo...a tough year long fight for sure. My case is not unusual...there are so many inspirational fighters out there everyday and the kids are the bravest...
Patrick Swayze was just such a fighter...two years older than me...a two year fight...God bless you Lisa...he was a great guy. So, if I sound like I'm having a great time at this Radio Station...you would be right. I know Radio and I'm proud of what we do here and I'm honored and lucky to be apart of it with you. Thanks for your support...

Having taken a few weeks off the Thursday morning rotation I was more than ready to jump back into the fray. My good friend and Thursday morning sidekick Gregory Satori was nice enough to fill in for me while I was on vacation and I sure appreciate that! As a matter of fact I think he’s having so much fun just being back on the radio he would do every day if we asked him to. Hummmm. This morning's show was a mix of some of my favorites (surprise!).
I watched Cadillac records last week, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Beyonce made a beautiful Etta James, as I’m sure she was in the day. All of the characters played their roles pretty true to form, but wern’t there two (Leonard & Phil) Chess brothers? They didn’t have to exaggerate too much of the story line to keep it interesting, and some things I would have liked them to spend more time on, but overall it was okay. A few less MF’s would have been okay too. Anyway you can’t beat Chess Records for blues music period! If you told me that I to choose 5 records for my collection there’s no question that they would all be Chess recordings. Music on this label by these artists Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Milton, Little Walter’s and countless others has been emulated more than any other form of music ever.

This show had to be one of my worst efforts in a long time. Not so much the music although there were a couple CD’s I played that I didn’t care for at all. Generally I struggled with the “on air” portion of the show all morning. It didn’t help that I woke up at exactly 5:19 and was in the station ready to go at 5:31, but even after I finally woke up I made one mistake after another. How embarrassing! I played 3 songs from Tab Benoit’s “Brother to the Blues” (I love that CD) and 2 songs from Luther Kent’s tribute to Bobby Bland and that’s a very good CD as well. I was less impressed with the songs I played from The Insomniac’s new CD “At least I’m not with you” and Zac Harman’s latest “From the Root”. I don’t know what “root” Zac Harman is referring to, but I’ll have to take both of these CDs home for a more thorough revue before I’ll consider playing either one of them on my show.

I’m not sure why, but I thought that it would be kind of cool to play a bunch of duet songs on this mornings blues show. The funny thing is, BB Kings Deuces Celebrity Duet CD was my inspiration to do this, and I totally spaced on playing a song off that CD. That will give me something to look forward to for my next show. I also enjoyed playing some new music from the Severn label. Soul / blues singer Charles Wilson has come a long ways from his Ekco records days and the classic recordings such as “It’s sweet in the backseat” and “It ain’t the size” or “Mr. Freak”. Charles also cut a couple CDs with Delmark, but he seems to be gaining some serious momentum with this new release “Troubled Child”. I like most every song on the recording. Another nice new CD that we’ve just received from Severn is the “Chicago Blues Harmonica Project”. This new CD features some of the lesser known blues harmonica players that work in the windy city. There’s nothing groundbreaking or earth shattering on this CD, but it is filled with solid blues music from talented musicians that deserve some recognition.

I had every intention of making this mornings show a little heavy to acoustic blues. I started out with a song from Guy Davis’s great new CD “Sweetheart Like You”, but I got sidetracked by Bettye Lavette’s latest CD “The Scene of the Crime” that features the Drive By Truckers, and I never quite got back to the acoustic thing. As a matter of fact between the phone calls and sorting through all the new music I feel like this mornings show was a little scattered and uneven musically. Oh well that’s the beauty of doing a radio show every other week. I can look forward to putting forth a more consistent effort next time.

Our newest blues DJ Gregory Satori made his solo debut this morning, and despite a few computer complications he put together a great blues show. According to Gregory he had about 10-12 phone calls from well-wishes and 1 guy that called twice to complain about Gregory’s polished commercial sound. Overall this morning’s show was uplifting and entertaining from start to finish. I enjoyed sharing music from a new CD that I think is just fantastic. Honestly I had never heard of Eric Lindell, but he’s recorded 3 CD’s with Alligator records and has 8 total recordings since 1996. His newest release “Gulf Coast Highway” is a pure delight. Eric’s vocal style is similar to Delbert McClinton, the songs are well crafted, tightly arranged, superbly played and highly entertaining. Gulf Coast Highway is a great CD filled with lots of catchy (but rather short) songs that should appeal to a wide audience. Tune in next week for more from the two headed monster.

This morning’s show was split between myself and a new DJ in training Gregory Satori. Gregory has an extensive background in radio and he is already becoming a huge asset to KRVM. His enthusiasm and positive attitude is contagious and he will no doubt win our listeners over. My 1 hour portion of the show zipped by with some choice tunes by Volker Stifler, Ronnie Earl, and Toni Lynn Washington just to name a few. I played two songs from a brand new CD from Too Slim and the Taildraggers. I took the CD home to give it a thorough revue and I think it’s another well crafted solid effort from one of the true guitar greats of the pacific northwest. This CD is filled with lots of good new original tunes. I played two of my favorites with the title track “Free your Mind” and “Testament” which is a song with a cool Neil Young feel to it. Tim Langford is one of those unique guitar players that just keeps evolving with one cool style after another, and this CD is filled with great guitar riffs and powerful songs. Gregory added his fine play list to the mix and together we formed one very good Thursday morning Breakfast with the Blues show. The plan is to do one more joined effort and then cut him loose with his first very own show on Thursday April 2nd.Be sure to tune in for that!

I just cannot get enough of Guy Davis’s new CD “Sweetheart like you”. Guy Davis is an incredible talent, but this CD is over the top with great musicianship, well written originals and wonderfully arranged cover tunes. The 2 songs I played on today’s show are just 2 of the 14 choice cuts. I also threw in 2 songs from Nick Moss’s latest release “Play it ‘til tomorrow, which is a fine 2 CD set of raw great guitar riff laden song that you can enjoy over and over. I received sad news Wednesday afternoon that New Orleans blues artist Snooks Eaglin passed away. He certainly will be sorely missed. His ability to play a wide range of songs and his ability to perfectly understand and make the tunes his own earned him the nickname the "human jukebox." Eaglin claimed in interviews that his musical repertoire included some 2,500 songs. At live shows, he did not usually prepare set lists, and was unpredictable, even to his band mates. He played songs that come to his head, and he also took requests from the audience. Eaglin lost his sight not long after his first birthday after being stricken with glaucoma, and spent several years in the hospital with other ailments. Around the age of five Eaglin was given a guitar by his father, which he taught himself to play by listening to and playing with the radio. In 1947, at the age of 11, Eaglin won a talent contest organized by radio station WNOE by playing "Twelfth Street Rag". Three years later, he dropped out of the school for the blind to become a professional musician. In 1952, Eaglin joined the Flamingoes, a local 7-piece band started by Allen Toussaint. The Flamingoes didn't have a bass player, and according to Eaglin, he played both the guitar and the bass parts at the same time on his guitar. He stayed with The Flamingoes for several years, until their dissolution in the mid-50s. I’ve always been a huge fan of Snooks Eaglin, his music will continue to entertain and inspire listeners on Thursday morning “Breakfast with the Blues”.

Busy morning with lots of nice phone calls from some of our loyal listeners / supporters. It was a fun show, but I felt like I was chasing my tail most of the time. I played a couple from Billy Flynn’s new CD “Blues Drive”. Billy has been involved in the Chicago blues scene since the mid. 80’s. He’s performed with countless Chicago players including Jimmy Dawkins, The Legendary Blues Band. Mississippi Heat, Jody Williams, Little Arthur Duncan, Willie Kent and many more. I’m looking forward to taking this double CD home and indulging myself with a good blues recording. I did take Chris Duarte’s new CD home and I have to call’em as I see’em, or in this case as I hear’em. I became a fan of Chris Duarte when I heard his 1994 “Texas Sugar / Strat Magik” album. His SRV type style and ability was no doubt impressive. I hung in there with his 1997 “Tailspin Headwack”, which was not really a blues album, or a rock album, but there was enough good music to keep me interested and entertained. Unfortunately in my opinion he hasn’t put out a CD since 1997 that is something anyone over sixteen would want to listen to. Counting his recent release “396 Chris Duarte & Bluestone Co.” Chris Duarte has put out one loud wildly annoying CD after another. His last 5 CDs are just the same album recorded over and over. His intense, “lets see how many notes we can loudly slash out there” in a steady steam of average songs is disappointing. Chris, who is your target audience? When can we expect something more than “look at me, I’m a great guitar player listen to all this fury”. You’re almost 50, give us something new, something I can put in my stereo that doesn’t make me a nervous wreck and have my wife and kids yelling at me to turn it down. I want to be a fan again. Maybe I could be your manager.

We’ve gotten a lot of new music in over the past couple of weeks. Whether it’s a new release from a popular blues artist or a CD from someone I’ve never heard of it’s always fun to check the new stuff out. My thoughts are that if someone is willing to send our little radio station (thanks mostly to the efforts of our Sunday blues host BoogieKing Steve) their sweat and soul recorded on a disc, the least I can do is give it a listen and put it out on the airways if I can. For instance, I’ve never heard of Cookie and the Vasrantz, but when I listened to it I really liked it. Cookie has a nice voice the song selection and musicians are good. It was also nice to get something new from John Nemeth. He’s one of those guys that deserves to break through to the next level. He has the whole package, good vocals, great harp player, original tunes and a tight band. His new CD sounds good, hopefully it’ll give him some momentum. Other new CD’s that I played were Shemekia Copeland’s “Never going back” and something for an east coast group Lil’ Cliff and the Cliffhangers. The CD title “God Bless Women” and artwork inspired me to take a closer look at it. I didn’t get a chance to listen to the entire recording, but I can tell you we’ll be playing the hell out of the title track. It is a fun catchy well written tune that makes the CD worth having for that song alone. Nuff said. We’ll keep the blues rolling!

Having spent the last three weeks away from the radio station you would think that I would have a long list of songs that I wanted to play on my show when I got back into the swing of things. Truth is I decided last night that I would start my show with Debbie Davies and Deborah Coleman. This would buy me some time to look through the cabinets and pull out some more choice ditties. All in all I’d same despite my lack of pre-planning the show went fairly well. It was a fun entertaining show (I think) and I thought everything flowed together pretty well. I didn’t play much new stuff this morning, concentrating instead on some of the more familiar “mainstream” blues artists, if there is such a thing as mainstream artists in the oft-ignored blues music. It’s good to be back, and I would to thank our Sunday morning host BoogieKing Steve for coming on Christmas Day “for crying out loud” and again on New Years Day. Thank goodness for his help, I physically could not have made the 5:30 AM show on New Years Day, especially since I was puking my guts out at 3:00 AM in my front yard. I’m sure my neighbors (no question a few of them had to have heard me) were happy to see me start the New Year the same way I always do. Happy New Year!

I had the chance to revue a new CD from Dave Egan. I’m listening to this thing and thinking, wow this is good. Who is this guy? Come to find out after looking into it a little (thanks to Boogie King Steve) Dave Egan happens to be one hell of a prolific songwriter, and has written songs for scores of famous people. He has a terrific laid back style and his CD features great song and great musicianship. I also threw in a song off of Keith Crossan’s (Tommy Castro Band) new CD and a couple Christmas tunes from Ecko Records Christmas compilation CD. You have to be a little careful with Ecko’s stuff; sometimes they can get a little too suggestive for morning drive time play, but generally it all good. Boogie King Steve will be filling in for over the Holidays, so have a great Holiday and we’ll be throwing some more tunes at you next year.

I honestly didn’t have a plan for this show or have a lot of time to put much foresight into what I was going to play on the air. I generally try to come in better prepared because I think we owe to our listeners to put some effort into supplying them with a quality show. Unfortunately Thursday morning kind of snuck up on me. I did get a few positive calls and a nice e-mail, so the show must not have been a total debacle. With the recent news that Odetta had passed away, I knew that I needed to play some of her music. She was such a great person, and a huge influence on so many people. Bob Dylan credits her for turning him onto folk music. Think about that. Her voice and her music is so moving. Beyond that it was a fun morning of playing music from some of my favorites, thank goodness I have so many favorites to choose from.

This morning’s show happened to fall on Thanksgiving Day. Since my blues show takes place on Thursday morning, this week’s show is my 7th or 8th Thanksgiving Day breakfast with the blues. I generally like to occasionally tie one song to another or match related artists together on occasion, but I’m not huge on running long extensive play sets with common themes. But I generally try to play a fair amount food related songs on the Thanksgiving Day shows. Today’s show was no exception. In today’s computer age, and the art of googling it’s really fairly easy to piece theme shows together. I also played a couple songs as a personal tribute to Robert Lucas. Robert passed away this past Sunday. It’s truly sad to see someone so young (46) and so talented die at such an early age. I’ve been a fan of Robert Lucas, and I am truly sad that I won’t have a chance to see Robert perform live again, or get to check out new material from him. He will certainly be missed, but his music legacy will live on with songs we play on KRVM. Lastly I had a chance to revue a new CD from Glen Terry. His CD “Soul Searchin’” is really good. He is a great guitar player / songwriter and I’m looking forward to playing more songs from this CD on upcoming shows. Hope you had a great Holiday!

I've ben a bit busy lately, what playing in two bands (rehearsing really) and working in the wood product business. With todays woeful economy any job, be it stessful or not, is a good thing. But if you really want a good time try selling an endless supply of building products in a market when these very little building going on. Anywho this set list was basily another installment of good songs (at least I thought so) for some of my favorite, and I have lots of farorites which make this DJ thing most enjoyable. I played a song fror Carolyn Wonderland's new disc, she tends to scream too much for my taste, but she is an amazing artist. I also threw some new Lil' Dave Thompson in there and finished with two songs from Susan Tedeschi's new CD. I love Susan, she could sing the newspaper (even in today's tough times) and I would love her. I started the morning off with a half hour of Portland / Eugene based blues artists, and could have rolled into a full hour quite easily. The amount of talented musicians that have called Eugene home is extraordinary.
We have been getting so much new music in so I thought I should try to spin a fair amount of new stuff into my show this morning.
Kudos go out to our Sunday morning host Boogieking Steve for his relentless efforts in making sure KRVM is on the cutting edge of new blues music and deserving artists world wide. Thanks Steve! This morning some of the new stuff that I played and really enjoyed was Irma Thomas’s “In Grand Style”, Rory Block’s “Blues Walking like a Man” and Clarence Spady’s “Just Between Us. There was really no pre-planning involved in putting this mornings show together. I knew I would start with the song “black-eyed peas” from Carey Bell’s very fine “Heartaches & Pain” CD, but beyond that I was flying by the seat of my pants so to speak. All in all I did manage to mix in some new material from the likes of Pinetop Perkins, James Hinkle, Fiona Boyes and Buddy Guy. I threw in some classic artist like Albert King, Charles Brown and Mississippi Fred McDowell. I Featured a few songs by some lesser know artists like Kathy Walker Gary Allegretto and Cathy Lemmons. Then I finished the show with some guitar laden songs from Lil’ Dave Thompson, Jimmy Thackery and Duke Robillard. I had fun, and judging from some listener feedback we did okay. Tune in next week. Who knows what we’ll be up to.

Another fun Thursday morning breakfast with the blues show on KRVM 91.9. This week I showcased a really great new album from Lloius Coloma. Llouis is quite an accomplished piano player and he has rounded up about 10 other piano players including Mitch Woods, Bob Seeley and Carl Sonny Leyland. This album cooks with great dual grand piano instrumentals. Every song on this CD would fit nicely into my Thursday morning play lists. Back from a week away from my Thursday morning Breakfast with the blues show. I’d like to give Chef Gail & Boogie King Steve a big thanks for filling in for me. I’m sure that they did me proud with a marvelous blues show! I was lucky enough to truck it over to Joseph, OR and catch the Bronze, Brews & Blues festival there. It was a great experience in a beautiful setting. Joseph and the surrounding areas are visually stunning. We camped at the Wallowa State campground at the base of Mt Howard and it was a very nice relaxing time. I think anyone who is into blues music and likes living in Oregon should head on over and check out the festival. I wouldn’t recommend driving over just for the festival, because it is 440 miles from Eugene, but you plan it right it can be a lot of fun. We loaded up my 1975 VW bus and headed out on Thursday, made a stop in Hood River for some golf. Stopped in Pendleton and slept in a tee-pee. Got up Friday morning and had a great breakfast buffet at the Wildhorse Casino (yeah we were roughing it), played another round of golf. Then headed on over the hill to Joseph and pulled into camp around 6.
One of the highlights of the festival was getting to see the Ty Curtis Band in that setting. They put on a good show, with a great mix of music and I’m sure that they won over some new fans. Other highlights of the festival was The Strangetones. They stoled the show for me, what a cool band, with great original tunes and a tight choreographed performance. Too Slim and the Taildraggers had to endure a bad sound system experience, but worked their way through that and put on a good show for a waning but very enthusiastic crowd. A very good time!
This morning’s show started off basic enough with Albert Collins tied in with Coco Montoya and Debbie Davis. And as usual I weaved my way through some new stuff, a couple old classics and everything in between. I was happy to play Jimmy Rogers’ classic (one of the best all time blues songs) “That’s all right”, and BB King’s often covered but always good “Rock me baby”, done quite nicely by Mighty Joe Young. Tune in next week and check it out, because it my job to make our community a better place “one song at a time”.

Another fun filled Thursday morning breakfast with the blues. No real pre-planning this morning, but it seems like it only takes a song or two to inspire me to move off in one direction or another anyway. I did play music from a few of my favorite records like Otis Spann’s “Biggest Thing since Colossus” which feature early Fleetwood Mac members. A couple other favorites were Otis Rush’s “Anyplace I’m Going” and Champion Jack Dupree’s “Blues From The Gutter” I consider all three of those CD’s an essential part of my blues collection. A new CD that I like and got to play this morning was Eric Deaton’s “Gonna Be Trouble Here” he’s another young outstanding musician that I’d never heard before, but I like his stripped down style. Beyond that I played Koko Taylor’s new “Old School” CD. She recently won a blues foundation award for that recording, but from what I can tell the award was one of those due respect awards because she has put out a lot better stuff over the course of her career. But I’m glad she is being recognized for the great performer that she is. She’s earned the respect. I finished the morning off with sort of a Latin flare with songs from Duke Robillard, Sue Foley and Charlie Musselwhite. I was happy to get two phone calls from listeners that appreciated Sue Foley’s Mediterranean Breakfast. One more Thursday morning show in the books, KRVM doing our part to make our community a better place “One song at a time”.

I thought today’s show was a good mix of music that seemed to have a pretty good flow to it. I’m not a real big Buddy Guy fan, but I know he’s well liked and in an effort to always play a wide variety of artists each week I pulled a 1987 vinyl record called “This is Buddy Guy” which was recorded at a Berkley, CA club called House of New Orleans. The record has some great live Buddy Guy on it featuring AC Reed on Sax, and it sounded like everyone was having a lot of fun. I also played two songs from a couple of CDs that I recently picked up. One was the great sax man “Jimmy “Houserocker” Cavallo”, and the other was a recent re-release self title album by “Mighty Joe Young”. I like them both a lot. You can count on hearing more from both of these CDs on future Thursday’s "Breakfast with the blues" shows.

I played a cut form Tony Joe White’s new CD “Deep Cuts” it’s great that he’s still putting out good quality music 40 years after “Polk Salad Annie”. I played the title track from the late Gary Primich’s “Company Man” CD, I really like that song & CD. I did some pre-planning for this morning's show and pulled about 10 CD's from my personal collection to share with the listeners. When I got to the station I noticed that I had forgot to put the CDs into my bag, so I was pretty much scambling from the first song on. Fortunatly I was getting a few more calls than I normally do from folks that were liking the show, and requesting for a song or an artist to be played. Quite often when I'm doing a show, one song or music style will inspire another one and it goes from there. It was nice to have the requests to lay the ground work for the direction of my show. I tossed in a few lessser known folks that I like with Johnny Heartsmith and Al Bisil, but gennerally I think popular artists are "popular artists" for a reason, listeners enjoy listening to them. Pretty simple huh? I think it's cool to play some music that is from some unknown band, or unique artist, but a consistant run of generic mildly interesting music is not that entertaining. I try to work within a standard successful radio format, which gennerally is a mix of new, classic and popular music.

One of the fun things about doing a volunteer blues show on KRVM is blowing the dust off the somewhat forgotten, or maybe lesser played great reissued blues CD’s or original vinyl records that we’re lucky enough to have on hand. Such is true with Louis Myers 1978 Testament recording “I’m a Southern Man”. Louis Myers is a true Chicago blues man, and one of the best sidemen of his era. Another record that I enjoyed playing was Robert Jr. Lockwood’s “Mr. Blues is back to stay”. It’s a classic 1980 Rounder recording featuring Mr. Lockwood and his good friend Johnny Shines. I also had fun tying artists and songs together like Fleetwood Mac doing a Jimmy Rogers politically incorrect song “World’s in a tangle”. Or Sean Costello doing a great job on Otis Rush’s “You’re killing my love”. Speaking of Jimmy Rogers, his “That’s all right” is definitely one of my favorite all time classic blues songs. I always enjoy putting it out there. I had lots of calls today, and a couple of requests which I’m always happy to accommodate if possible.

Another fun Thursday morning blues show. No real direction or theme this morning, just a good variety (I hope) of blues music to help cure what ails your soul. I did manage to delve into some new stuff that sounded pretty good to me. I like to take new music home to revue before playing it on the air, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way. I quickly scanned the new Kenny Neal CD “Let Life Flow” and found a nice version of his fathers “Starlight Diamond” I think he did a great job of putting his style into the song while maintaining his dad’s original arrangement, very nice. I also played a cut from JW Jones new album “Bluelisted”. I took a look at who he had performing with him on the album (Little Charlie Baty, Junior Watson, Larry Taylor and Richard Innis) and I knew that I could probably play any song on this CD and it would be pretty good. How does this guy get all these great guys to play on all his albums? Put me in front of this group and I could almost make something worth listening to.

This week’s show was a combination of classics, favorites with some new stuff sprinkled in. You could say that is the recipe for most of my shows. I played two from Big Mama Thornton’s “Tougher than Dirt” record, and was temped to play a few more. I had a chance to revue the Mannish Boys new CD “Lonesome Feelin'” and a new one from Clarence Spady called "Just between us"and liked them both. The Mannish Boys is an All-Star cast of blues artists, joined together by the Delta Groove label. This CD features great vocals and some of the finest playing you can find anywhere. Their selection of songs and arrangements make this a good listen. Clarence Spady was also a nice treat. It's been a while since Clarence has put out a CD, but this CD is solid from the first song, right to the end. His jazz influenced guitar style and funk style song writing makes this recording a nice change of pace. Tune in next week for some more new stuff, classics and of course songs from more of my favorite artists.

Just another average Thursday morning blues show on 91.9 KRVM. I threw some new stuff in there from the Mannish Boys featuring Johnny Dyer with a nice version of Willie Dixons Same Thing. Also featured a semi-new song from Mary Flower from a new compilation disc just out on Yellowdog records, a very fine CD, and something from Perry Weber. I'd never heard of him before checking out this CD, and I really liked it. Looking foward to playing more on future shows. Be sure to tune in next week!

The blues World recieved some sad news this week. Sean Costello was found dead in his hotel room in Atlanta on April 15th, one day before his 29th birthday. I don't want to speculate on his cause of death, but I will say that I have been a fan of this very talented singer / song writter / guitar player since he first grabbed my attention while playing guitar for Susan Tedeschi. I've liked all of his solo efforts and was truely saddened upon hearing this dreadful news. With that said I felt I needed to share some of his music with our listening audience and played two songs from his "Moanin' for Molasses" album and two from his latest recording "We Can Get Together". Beyond that I didn't have a lot of time to pre-plan this show. Having just seen Marcia Ball at Antones in Austin, TX, I knew that I wanted to play at least a couple cuts from her new recording, and with Smokin' Joe Kubek coming to town soon I thought it would make sense to play some of their stuff. I tried to mix it up with a wide variety of artists and styles and keep everyone, including myself off balance. I think I caught a groove here and there and had some fun.
